Preclinical Research

Also known as: GSH, gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, Reduced glutathione

Overview

Glutathione is the body's most abundant endogenous antioxidant tripeptide (Glu-Cys-Gly), synthesized in virtually all cells and critical for redox homeostasis, detoxification, and immune function. Research has examined supplemental glutathione and precursors (NAC, glycine) for oxidative stress reduction, liver protection, skin lightening, and immune support.

Possible Uses

The following areas have been examined in research contexts. This does not constitute medical advice or imply proven efficacy in humans.

  • Immune Support
  • Skin & Wound Healing
  • Anti-Aging & Longevity
Mechanism of Action

Acts as a primary cellular antioxidant by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) through its thiol group. Serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and S-transferases, facilitating detoxification of xenobiotics and peroxides. Also regulates immune cell function and modulates NF-kB inflammatory signaling.

Safety Notes

Endogenous molecule with good safety profile. IV glutathione used clinically in some contexts for liver disease. Oral absorption of unmodified glutathione is poor; liposomal or precursor forms studied for better bioavailability. Not FDA-approved as a drug.

Research Profile

Half-Life

~30 minutes (intravenous); oral bioavailability is low due to GI degradation

Administration

oral (liposomal form for better absorption), intravenous, topical, nebulized (research)

Legal Status (US)

Dietary supplement (DSHEA). Available as pharmaceutical-grade IV preparation. Not FDA-approved as a drug for specific disease indications.
